The staff at Paterson Grain in Holland go over and above being “just” a retail to pick up seed and pesticides. The staff work with individual farm operations before the crop season starts to understand the crops they are growing, pests they are concerned about and goals they have for yield, quality and markets. They find out the products the farm is intending on using and make sure they have those products in stock, on site, when they are needed. If the product is special or not common, they work to find it. If they can’t, they work to figure out what could be used as a successful replacement. In the busy season, staff stay late, have weekend hours to accommodate farming schedules. They even will run product out to their partner aerial applicator on the local airstrip, as the sun is rising and winds are calm, to ensure the right product is applied at the right crop stage, when conditions are right. This is invaluable in years when diease pressure is high and “right” weather is elusive
The Holland Paterson Grain staff are great for organizing and facilitating in field testing. Variety trials to test the local standard versus others for wheat, canola and soybeans. This provides a great local resource for farmers in the area to see first hand the differences as well as resulting yields. They have also done trials with fungicides, in season nitrogen for protein enhancement in wheat and swathing versus straight-cutting canola. They do the work and get experience to share with producers. Staff are always approachable and willing to lend a helping hand. When you are running short on product, they deliver. When a crop takes a turn for the worst, they are quick to come look at the field with you and diagnose or use there network to diagnose the issue. After hours if you are short a combine driver, they have even been known to come and offer some relief by driving, so you can run trucks and get the grain in the bin. They are always available and always happy to help out.
Holland Recreation Council
The Holland Recreation Council operates the local ice rink to keep an active and accessible CanSkate program, Minor hockey program from pre-Novice to Bantam and supports two recreational adult teams in the winter. In the summer they then focus on baseball programs from ages 4 to 18 and support a recreational ladies adult team at the ball diamonds. The sport programs that are offered are affordable for all in the area, that want to participate and keep a lot of kids active. The facilities become community meeting places when sports are occurring and brings the community together.
If successful, the funds would be used towards fixing the ice rink building drainage and to complete concrete repairs in a section of the rink where heaving is occurring.
